Achin'
Review by: Dave Cortez
If you haven't heard of Achin’, we strongly recommend that you check them out. This three piece punk-driven and blues-influenced band puts on a rockus and energetic set that is perfect for anyone looking to have a lively evening in Tokyo.
Guitarist and front man Shouzi Yasuyuki delivers a dynamic stage performance as he carries each tune with his slick guitar work and soulful vocals. Shouzi used to play his guitar on the streets of Tokyo for anyone who would listen, but back in 2014 collected his old high school buddies to form the band we see today that includes drummer Ishihara Akira and bassist Sakatani Shōtatō.
As is normally the case with three piece bands, the drum and bass work are critical to the feel of the music. Sakatani and Ishihara play off each other exceptionally well and really drive the music. Sakatani’s massive upright bass alone adds its unique vibe to Achin’s performance.
The band members have known each other for over 10 years, meeting back in high school in their school’s music program. “It’s surprising to me that I’m still playing the drums after all these years,” joked drummer Ishihara, chuckling as he reminisced about his high school days. Sakatani recalled how it was actually guitarist Shouzi who taught him how to play bass all those years ago. Their closeness as friends clearly comes out in their performance as you can usually catch one of them cracking a joke to another on the mic between songs.
Achin’ is obviously more than just a group of friends playing music. They clearly work very hard on their craft. Shouzi described his feeling when making music with his band mates, “I enjoy hearing the way that our own music sounds once it is complete. Making music sound good is difficult, but once you get it, the final product is super enjoyable.”
We highly recommend that music fans pick up a copy Achin’s recently released a record titled “SLOGUN”, tracks from which are featured here on Tokyo Slice. In addition to checking out their recorded music, look for Achin’s next live performance in Tokyo on their social media feeds also linked here.
“We just want people to listen to our music as much as possible,” said guitarist Shouzi as we conclude our interview with Achin’, and in our opinion here at Tokyo Slice, people should do exactly that. GO LISTEN!!!
